Frequently Asked Questions About NAPAKool™ Is NAPAKool™ recommended by major engine companies? SCA type coolant conditioners (NAPAKool™) are recommended by virtually all engine and equipment manufacturers. Will NAPAKool™ separate in my cooling system? No. NAPAKool™ forms a true solution in cooling systems and will not separate. Can it be used in gasoline engines, including cars? Yes. You will have the same benefits in gasoline powered units as you do in diesels. Should I use a filter with soluble oil? A filter is not absolutely necessary. However, if you start with a clean system, keep it that way with an additive free filter. Is it compatible with soluble oil? No. We suggest you remove soluble oil because the ethylene glycol in antifreeze can react with soluble oil to form “green slime”. The use of soluble oil and stopleak is not recommended by engine manufacturers. They are not compatible with other additives. Why use NAPAKool™ in addition to antifreeze? Two reasons: (1) Antifreeze will not prevent scale deposits and (2) the corrosion inhibitors in antifreeze deplete wit use. How does NAPAKool™ stop cavitation? Three ways : (1) By forming a physical barrier (a chemical film), (2) by preventing corrosion of the metal surface, thus strengthening its resistance to cavitation and (3) by reducing foaming which means less air entrapment – a major cause of cavitation. Must I clean before using? Yes. However, if your unit is already clean, you may add NAPAKool™ directly to it. How can I remove core sand without a filter? You can’t ! Filters are a must. Is it compatible with antifreeze? NAPAKool™ is compatible with most glycol-based antifreezes. Consult with NAPA Filter Technical Service Department on use with Dowtherm 209 and extended life antifreeze. What affect does NAPAKool™ have on lube oils? No effect. If coolant gets in lube oil, a sludge will form due to the presence of water and/or antifreeze. NAPAKool™ will neither worsen nor prevent the sludge. Does NAPAKool™ attack seals and hoses? No. It is compatible with all seals and hoses. Can I overtreat? Can I undertreat? Yes to both. Follow dosage and change intervals recommended in charts and instruction sheets. How does it keep my engine running cool and clean? By preventing scale and corrosion, it provides a clean cooling system, which allows the maximum, original design heat transfer. How does NAPAKool™ stop corrosion? NAPAKool™ contains a balanced film-forming inhibitor system and protects all metals in the cooling system against corrosion while maintaining a beneficial alkaline (pH) environment. How does it stop scale deposits? By chemically tying up the hardness in the water to prevent the formation of a hard adherent deposit. Why is preventing scale deposits important? Scale retards heat transfer. Because of its insulating properties, only 1/16 of an inch of mineral scale may cause a 40% drop in heat transfer. This can result in over heating causing cracked heads and warped or cracked blocks. How often is the filter to be changed? At the time you first add NAPAKool™, install a NAPA Cooling System Additive Free Filter. Change the filter at 20,000 miles. Install a new filter and then change the filter at 50,000 mile intervals or annually. Check for proper part number of filter. This applies to part numbers 4069 and 4070 filters and requires the use of NAPAKool™ Liquid Additive. To ensure proper coolant conditioner concentration, use NAPA Test Kit at intervals of 250 hours or 15,000 miles. When using the test kit, follow maintenance practices outlined in the test kit instruction card. Depletion rate of the NAPA Chemical Additive may vary according to engine condition, cooling system condition, engine type or operating condition. 1053
